Meeting 4

The officers finalized the required documents and clarifies what is the final decisions that are made in for our FTS. The also assigned us our respective bus we will ride during the trip either bus 1 or bus 2.

Meeting 3

Meeting 3 is the where we discussed to what places, institutions or companies we wanted to go which has a relevance to us students of the Institute of Computing. The officers asked for our ideas or suggestions in order for us to be involved in the creating of our own itinerary.

Meeting 2

Second meeting is where the officers and us students discussed  to what kind of modal we have to choose. In order to come up with a final model to be taken, the officers gave us waivers where we can select from modal A, B, C. The waiver should be also signed by the parents so they can also be involved to ever what model to be selected.

Meeting 1

The first meeting was presided by the previous Field Trip and Seminars president and shared to us their preparations, struggles and how did the manage to overcome the pressure in peparing for the trip during their FTS time. That day also is the day where we elected our own officials for our FTS.

Minor Paper

As part of our FTS subject, this overview is about the minor seminar that is included in our chosen model for this subject. The event was held here at our very own university particularly at the social hall of the school. It is a whole day event where the objective is still to develop us student in the Institute of Computing by participating in this kind of seminars. The event is divided into different kind of activities: Graphic design, web development, hackathon and pitching competition. A couple of speakers were invited where they shared their expertise and experience in all of the event’s activities. The event was held on January 23, 2016 at 8:00 am and ended at around 4:00 pm.
First Speaker
First part of the seminar is the graphic design. Mr. Ralph Gideon, who is a former student in University of Southeastern Philippines shared his experience as a student. He worked as a programmer in a specific company until he decided to study again in at the University of Mindanao at took up Fine Arts and is currently an instructor in a major school here in Davao city.
He shared some basic knowledge in graphic design and some useful techniques in making a graphical art. He told us how a graphic designer works in a company and what are the struggles that he face every day like how do you handle the clients in terms in coming up with a final design. He also gave us tips and advice how to be successful in what you are trying to achieve right now.
Being a graphic designer is no easy task because there are many things to consider not just from your point of view, but also from the point of view of other people and clients without the expense of coming up with a bad design. All the design that you put in a subject should have a significant reason why you use this and why you use that in order to please the clients with the result of your design.

What I liked?
What I liked about the talk of Mr. Gideon is how he imparted his learning to us. For me as I consider myself not good in graphic design, he surely taught me a lot and gave me an idea on how graphic designing is done.
What I didn’t liked?
I am new in graphic designing so what the speaker said is sure good enough for me considering the time given to speaker. There is nothing for me not like about.
Second Speaker
Ms. Shannen Sapar, an undergraduate from university of Immaculate Conception is the second speaker. Her talk is about web development. Although Ms. Sapar is still an undergraduate, she is already working in a company as a web developer and is a front end designer.
As a web developer, her talk is obviously about HTML, Javascript, PHP, CSS etc. She introduced using framework, pre-compilers in creating websites and using boilerplates for web designing. She also shared some of her experiences while working in the web industry.
In my on the job training as a web developer of company, we are required by the company to familiar these web development trends. Because of this, I am already familiar with what Ms. Sapar is sharing to us and there is nothing much new I learned from her. But for my other colleagues, what she shared is surely will be a great help for them.
What I liked?
As for today’s generation, web development is one of the best skills that you can acquire. I really like that we have invited a speaker that can share about web development because not all of us are fortunate enough to be given a lesson, trips and tricks from an actual web developer.

What I didn’t liked?
I am familiar in web development and what the speaker said is sure good enough for me considering the time given to speaker. There is nothing for me not like about.
Third Speaker
The third speaker is a graduate from our very own university and is also an Information Technology student. His talk is about technopreneurship which relates to our pitching competition. He has a lot to share about pitching because in his days as an undergraduate in this school, he has joined startup competition. He shared his experience in joining these competitions and how it developed him especially in terms of his confidence and his knowledge in technopreneurship.
He’s talk is one that caught the attention of the students listening because most of them can relate on what he is talking about as an Information Technology student of the Institute of Computing. He also shared his struggles before he graduated in USeP.
What I learned?
Aside from his experience in joining startup competitions and his experience in USeP, there is nothing new that I learned because I have also joined bootcamps and startups and learned the stuff that he is talking about.
What I liked?
What I like is that how he handled the listeners. The way he speaks in a funny manner definitely got the attention of the audience and kept us lively the whole part of his talk. I also like how we can relate to him in terms of his experience in studying at USeP.
What I didn’t liked?
I have joined bootcamp and startup competition where we are required to pitch. In his talk, I can say that he really done his best and I am satisfied on all the things that he shared to us. There is nothing for me not like about.
Hackathon and Startup Pitching Competition
This is the last part of the whole day event. I would have joined the hackathon but as a requirement for our Technopreneurship 1 subject, I need to join the pitching competition.
Before we started, we are divided into groups where we present our ideas to an assigned officer or judge who will select two students from the group that will be competing at the final part of the competition and will win cash prize.
I was not lucky or maybe good enough to take part at the final part but I am still thankful for the experience and opportunity that was given to me.
What I learned?
I have joined bootcamp and startup competition that is more intense than this one where we are required to pitch to people we do not know. There is nothing new for me to learn.
What I liked?
I like how the officers handled the hackathon and the pitching competition because it has been successful and even prepared cash prizes for the winning individuals and teams.
What I didn’t liked?
Because the whole event was a success, there is nothing much to dislike in that day. It was really a good experience for the participants of the various competition.

TRAVEL REPORT
September 7 – 11, 2015

Seminar Overview
FTS or Field Trip and Seminars is one of the subject that is required in our curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. The subject is mainly to develop us students by increasing our knowledge             and intrapersonal skills through joining seminars and activities that has to do with our field as BSIT undergraduates. The trip includes two hours of intrapersonal and team building seminar, a major field trip to Manila, Philippines and lastly a minor field trip here in University of Southeastern Philippines, Davao City. The major field trip includes these activities which are held in these following places in Manila: DOST (Department of Science and Technology), SSS main office, PLDT Innolab, IBM Philippines,  Y4IT Seminar at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, MMDA Control Office, Tagaytay and EK (Enchanted Kingdom), University of the Philippines Computer Science Department and Resorts World Manila.

Day 1: September 7, 2015
Seminar at DOST (Department of Science and Technology), Bicutan, Taguig and SSS (Social Security System), East Avenue, Quezon City and the SSS main office.

What I learned?
In our trip to DOST, a familiar project called NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards) is presented by the speaker who is also an alumnus of our very own university.
Project NOAH is the DOST’s response to the call of President Benigno S. Aquino III for a more accurate, integrated, and responsive disaster prevention and mitigation system, especially in high-risk areas throughout the Philippines.
The Project will harness technologies and management services for disaster risk reduction activities offered by the DOST through PAGASA, PHIVOLCS, and the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), in partnership with the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences and the UP College of Engineering. The speaker also told us the story on how they developed the project, the process and the struggles they gone through.
They also told us how DOST could help us IT students especially in our field of study by giving us some possible careers they can offer if we finished our course.
There is nothing much interesting in our visit in SSS (Social Security System) which is probably because there is no much significant connection in our course. But I was amazed in the history and art that is hanged around the walls at the building’s seminar hall.

What I liked?
Our trip in DOST is what I really liked because of the information I learned specially in the project NOAH. The reason is because the speaker showed us an overview on how the project works. They also handled the seminar in a less boring way because the speakers actually included us in their activities by their question and answer portion where you can get reward if you participated in the Q and A.
The seminar also gave us some ideas on how to work on projects and what would be our future projects will be like specially in the last years of our study in the our university. It’s quite a big help for me in sparking some ideas in my mind on what will be my ITP project.

What I didn’t like?
What I didn’t like much about that day is our trip in SSS because as what I stated earlier. It is quite boring because the seminar doesn’t interest me so much. The reason must be that SSS only talked about how to get benefits from their department which is quietly do not really have a significant connection to us as IT students.

Day 2: September 8, 2015
Seminar in IBM Philippines at the Ayala Techno Hub, Quezon City and also to the Accenture Philippines.

What I learned?
IBM is one of the biggest IT Company here in the Philippines and in the globe. Their facilities is really good specially their technologies they developed. One of the topics in the seminar is the “Blue Mix”. This technology is much likely an API where a programmer can use to integrate in their projects because there is a lot of function you can use that is surely a big help in developing any applications or software. Blue Mix gives us a lot of information that is quite a big help in our daily lives like health.
Because Blue Mix is quite an expensive project for IBM, it is not actually free. But for students who are actually studying, they give an offer where you can use it for free for at most a year.
Another topic is about “Arduino”. A processor where it is a main catalyst in the development of some trending projects today called IOT (Internet of Things). It is also what the speaker is working a lot in his career in IBM. He showed us how the Arduino device helped in developing daily appliances and other devices and connect it to the internet.
IBM has also developed a project called WATSON. A computer that is very powerful that it can compete with other geniuses’ individuals around the world.  A video clip was shown to us how WATSON actually defeated champions of the game called Jeopardy.
Our next seminar is at Accenture, a management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company. The company also has a huge and great infrastructure and lots of employees. Like other outsourcing company, their way of communicating with each other is the English medium.
In our seminar, their friendly and energetic hosts and speakers presented how their company help their clients especially giving consultations in various field of technology. We had fun in the seminar because of the games they facilitated which we participated.

What I liked?
My visit in IBM is one of my favorite part of our FTS. It is because on what they presented to us which amazed me a lot. As an IT students we should be up to date on what trends on the field of Information Technology because we can actually integrate it in our future projects as students and maybe soon as an IT professionals.

What I didn’t like?
What I didn’t like a little about the trip is the hours we waited before the seminar at the IBM started. We actually waited more or less two hours inside the bus which actually bores us and wasted a lot of our time but I can say that the wait is maybe worth it because of the knowledge that we gained at the IBM seminar.

Day 3: September 9, 2015
The biggest gathering of IT people called the Y4IT Seminar at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia.

What I learned?
There are actually lot of things I learned at the convention. Too many to mention but what really catches my attention aside from our guardian, Mr. Randy S. Gamboa as a guest of honor in the convention is Microsoft’s latest technology called HoloLens. Which actually transforms your world with holograms by wearing the lens.
Another is the talk about internet freedom and security. A speaker in the convention talks about how ISP (Internet Service Provider) and other big companies like facebook affect our privacy and freedom in using the internet which he said that is actually these companies should not interfere with. It is really an interesting talk because we all internet users can actually relate to it.
The convention showed us lots of new trends in our field especially when we roam around the event area where can actually see it first hand and experience some of them.

What I liked?
What I liked in the convention is how huge it was. A gather of IT students and professionals from all over the world and some are even from other countries. There are a lots of talk that interests me. I am also proud that our guardian and instructor Mr. Randy S. Gamboa is one of the speakers of the event because he is also from our university.
As an IT student, I am one of the lucky ones who has participated in the convention that alone makes me happy.
Lastly is the lunch at Taste Asia which is probably one of the restaurant that I can say serves the delicious food in my entire life.

What I didn’t like?
What I didn’t like to see in the convention is that lots of people are just sleeping while the speakers are talking. Their talk are actually good and I felt sorry for the people that is not listening and just taking their time in sleeping in their seats while their mouths are open. I think they just wasted their money that paid in joining the event.

Day 4: September 10, 2015
Visit at MMDA Control Center and to Tagaytay. At last, a thrilling and exciting experience at Enchanted Kingdom.

What I learned?
This day is my awaited day in our visit in Manila because today we will go to Tagaytay and Enchanted Kingdom but before that. We still have a seminar at MMDA (Metro Manila Development Authority). What is running in my mind is that I can actually how this agency handle the very slow movement of traffic we are experiencing here in Manila from day 1 up to this day.
In the seminar, the MMDA showed us their technology in their traffic management especially their High Definition camera that can zoom in multiple times without losing the quality of the footage. They also showed us some footage that includes corrupt traffic enforcers and traffic accidents.
At the end of the day, I also learned how fun and thrilling it is visiting and riding the most heart-stopping rides in the Enchanted Kingdom.

What I liked?
What I liked about the trip in this day is that it is the only day where we did not only went to a seminar but also had fun in Tagaytay and watch some spectacular view and play at the Enchanted Kingdom where we can unwind and relax from the busy city of Manila.

What I didn’t like?
There is nothing too much to not like at this day because we actually had fun. Maybe the traffic that we experience every day is the only thing to not like about that day.

Day 5: September 11, 2015
Seminar at University of the Philippines Engineering Department & Computer Science Department, Quezon City.

What I learned?
UP (University of the Philippines) at Quezon City really amazed me because of its huge land area. In our visit there, we are introduced to their students who are having their thesis and they showed us their progress especially in their studies here at UP.
I can actually tell how brilliant their students are because of their presentation of their thesis which is very good in my opinion.
We took a walk around the facilities of their Engineering Department & Computer Science Department. For a state university, their facilities are good compared to our university which needs a lot of improvement in terms of facilities.
We met an undergraduate student which is also having her thesis. She showed us some mathematical stuff which I honestly cannot understand.

What I liked?
The students in UP motivated me to strive harder in my studies in USeP. Because from what I saw in the seminar and tour around the campus, I can conclude that I still have a lot to learn and improve in my studying habits to actually compete with these students.
It was a great experience meeting them and touring around the campus. It is the only campus that I saw a jeepney running around loading passengers like students.

What I didn’t like?
What I didn’t like is that we only visited their Engineer and Computer Science Department. I wished I we could have toured all over the campus but with its huge land area, it would cost us a lot of time.

APPENDIX
What can I recommend for the improvement of the advance seminar program of USeP?
We the students have created our itinerary for our FTS so I would probably address this recommendation of improvement to the students. They should choose carefully on what institution or company they should visit because based on my experience. A visit in SSS is a waste of time and effort. Student should choose an institute or company that they think would learn a lot in the field of Information Technology.
Maybe the best solution for this is to assign the right people for the right job in organizing the field trip in order to make the best out of it. Because the field trip would cost a lot of money, unorganized field trip and visits to irrelevant companies or institution would be a waste of money time and effort.
